Proper Use of Itself

I'm not certain how to properly use ITSELF in this context. Original sentence is - Reading this book itself is a journey. Correct? Or should it be - Reading this book is a journey in itself?

I have never used the word 'itself' in a sentence before, or recall reading it in this manner. I've seen 'in and of itself' and 'in itself', but that's it.

Can anyone help clarify? Thanks.

The self -words are sometimes used for emphasis besides their reflexive use. I, myself, don't approve of teenagers smoking. I think that both of your examples are fine.
