Proper use of "in" or "of"

'In' the group I would say.

best player of the group

In many languages which have a corresponding word for of, this word is used with superlatives like best. Not so for English, which uses in before the noun phrase that tells the pool from which the example was drawn.

the best player in the group
the finest writing in the world
the smartest student in the class
the kindest woman in
