Clive, i would disagree with your preference of #3 from your proposed suggestions. This has the comma in front of an "and"; one of the basic grammatical rules taught in school is to avoid this. Am i to assume that this is not the case and that commas can be used before an "and"?

Yes, you can put a comma before 'and'. Some factors that influence this are the length and the complexity of the sentence.
