Proper use of apostrophe

I want to put a family name on an item. The surname is Hughes I want to put 'The Hughes' but I don't know what the correct way to write this on a board is.txctt

In American usage: "The Hughes Family" or "Hughes" would be preferable to "The Hugheses".

If space is a problem use "Hughes".

The poster asked, what is the "correct" way...not, what would 'look' best.

I can't see the point of telling a poster the 'correct' way, and then dismissing that and advocating a personal choice based on my aesthetic taste,
