Proper sentence structure?

Can someone tell me what is wrong, if anything, with this sentence? Or provide me with a better solution and and explanation.

Within the body of Christ, the idea of of purpose is often understood as being synonymous with what is important.

I thought of changing it to, as being synonymous with the question "what is important?"

I am aware that I have poor grammar skills and I am working hard to change that.

Thanks for all of your help!
