Proper punctuation for the phrase 'as well as'

My colleague and I are in disagreement as to whether a comma goes both before and after the phrase or just before the phrase

Back in the dark ages when I went to school, my English teacher taught us that commas go both before and after "as well as," but I am often corrected by my young colleagues for my abundant use of commas.

When in doubt, go without. That's a good general rule for comma use. Too many make it confusing.

I actually looked this up in one of my favorite grammar books - Woe is I. The example O'Conner gives is commaless.
