Proper or common

Are "Muslim" and "Jew" proper nouns or common nouns?

That's what confuses me. Sometimes I see them starting with capital letter sometimes not.

Muslim and Jew should be capitalised. I don't consider them proper nouns, though.

My goodness! There's really more to this. Thanks Mr.Clive, this really added much to my knowledge. But I think I should just learn English language rather diving into the ocean of grammar and linguistic because I don't know how to swim.
