Proper nouns

Hello,

I would appreciate advise on the word 'acacia'. Its the name of a genus of tropical trees, but it is commonly used as in 'acacia woodland, acacia trees'. I believe it doesn't need to be capitalized if used as such. Though if referring to a specific Acacia tree it should be capitalized and italicized?

Thanks, D. Ogada

In general reference, you needn't capitalize/italicize the word even for a particular tree or species. You need do so only in scientific writing when referring specifically to the genus.
