proper noun for geographical names

I find some proper nouns with 'the' and a capital initial letter in the second word such as
'the Pacific Ocean'

And sometimes find proper nouns without 'the' or small initial letter in the second word.

African food
the African landscape

How can you know which word should be which representation.
