Proper name use by the same person

could u tell me what the grammatical term is when someone refers to themselves by therir own name?

ie.. say they are called John.....and they are speaking and say ..."john always tells the truth".or "john is going home"

dyu know what i mean???!...i cant think of the term...not first person singular is it?...no,,,dont think so!!

If John says "John always tells the truth" he is referring to himself in the third person. It is somewhat unusual, although children often do it when they are self-dramatizing. g.

If John says "John always tells the truth" he is referring to himself in the third person. It is somewhat unusual, although children often do it when they are self-dramatizing. More common (although nowadays almost obsolete in this country) is the deferential use of the third person in addressing others (e.g. in an up-market gents' outfitters: "Would Sir care to try it on?)
