Hi everyone~. In the following sentences, I am confused about what's the proper interpretation of the part underlined. I don't understand the grammtical role of "to augment" and "if-clause" in this context.
Should I understand the "if-clause" as a conditional clause(=in case that) OR as the same meaning with "whether"?
What do you think the best interpretation of the meaning of the part ?
Thank you~
Our special needs students experienced a win. A goal of our initiative was to educate more students by including them in the college preparatory classes with supports. Some skeptics believed that not only would students
fail but also our parent community would be averse to this change and possibly initiate more due process hearings. In the summer prior to the full-blown implementation, all parents/guardians of an IEP student had a
meeting with the supervisor of special education to augment the IEP if it was appropriate to have their child included in the college preparatory program. No parent objected, and every parent was ready and open to
embrace our initiative.
IEP = individualized education program I interpret it that the child's individual program would be augmented (adding the college prep courses) if, in a discussion with the parents, the supervisor ( determined that the child was a good candidate and could succeed at that level of class work.
