proper citation

The citation here is focused on the word mother, and in the Notes section at the end of the book I am going to elaborate on who that mother is.

Taking this into account, which of the following is the correct way of adding a raised number to a sentence?

These grassy hills bring joy the the Earth's commanding mother.¹

These grassy hills bring joy the the Earth's commanding mother¹.

Thanks.
