Proper capitalization and spelling of the term: Day 1.

In preparing proposals, the term "Day 1" is often used. This often referst to the first day of a contract or transition period. The first question has to do with proper capitalization. Is this term seen as a specific day and therefore a proper noun or is it a generic term in that every transition or contract has its first day.

Secondly, should it be Day One, spelling out a number less than 10? Or, can it be infered this is a date and/or unit of measurement and should use the arabic numeral 1?
