Hello guys, could someone have a look and maybe point out some mistakes or strange collocations? Thank you very much!
Animal Agriculture is the Leading Cause of Habitat Destruction and Species Extinction
“Could I have a grilled beef steak with green beans?” How often a waitress hears this order during her shift at a restaurant? For most of the people this unique occasion requires some special food to consume. Unfortunately, it’s the meat which attracts most of the diners’ attention. While sitting in the restaurant, waiting for your order, a newspaper lying on your table with the front-page headline: “Up to Two Acres of Rainforest Are Cleared Every Second” attracts your attention. Shaking your head, you cannot understand a catastrophic environmental situation this world is facing. However, it’s your beef steak which is responsible for the horrifying headline in the newspaper.
The most tragic outcome of animal agriculture is the land and habitat destruction. Considering the fact that the average American consumes approximately 206 pounds of meat per day, it can be concluded that there’s a great world demand for meat production. Unfortunately, millions of rainforest acres had to be cleared to breed the cattle for the greedy population. Of course, this is a sort of snowball effect because it directly affects habitat loss of living species as well. As at least half of the Earth’s species lives in tropical forests, the clearance of millions of acres each year results in mass species extinction. For example, a story of the extinct Tasmanian tiger is one of the outcomes of human encroachment on wildlife.
Equally important to land destruction is the large-scale exploitation of the oceans’ resources which culminates in ocean dead zones. Approximately 2.7 trillion animals are pulled from the ocean each year. Unfortunately, many of them are not even killed for meat, bur are more just side effects. Imagine a large fishnet, designed to be towed along the sea bottom, catching everything which doesn’t stay out of its way, including sharks, turtles and even the seabed life. Thus, for every pound of fish caught, up to five pounds of unintended marine species are caught and discarded as by-kill. The last outcome of animal agriculture I’d like to bring up is killing of wild animals to protect livestock. For example, shooting wolves is a long-standing practice in the ranching world. Once a farmer spots a wolf near his cattle, he instantly pursues the animal and after several miles of hunting, he shoots it. Killing of predators is not only senseless, but evidences suggest that it even increases the chances of livestock getting killed because of wolf’s pack behavior. It’s because they’re led by a male and female breeding pair and if one of them dies the pack can break up, creating several new breeding pairs. Many other animals have to face threat called people, for example the snow leopard, which is on the list of endangered animals.
To conclude, animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss and ocean dead zones. It seems almost impossible that we’ve cause it in order to have a piece of meat every day. Today, we face so many environmental issues that it’s not even a choice to make, but responsibility to take. Eat less meat, search for plant-based products, demonstrate your compassion for other species of this world. It’s just a matter of humanity.
