Here is a small fact. The US embargoed China before, for more than 20 years. Today, China is the most embargo-resistant country in the world by far. There is no other country, not the US, not Russia, as embargo-resistant as China.
Cubans as a whole demographic are highly educated so the external aggressor model only goes so far. From that point, The US embargo had many consequences on the Cuban people but they are resistant like the China people. The most important negative consequence was the shortage for fuel, virtually they were no more fuel from the article on nature.com.
The positive effect is the decrease in of heart diseases and diabetes. More bikes were available and no fuel to move all the buses, cars, etc. Cuban people were now without transport and a shortage of food was in the country. This look bad but overall, the population was much more active and eating with less binge.
At the end of the day, it only helped the Cuban government put the blame on the United States for everything bad that happened in Cuba. In my opinion, they knew that Cuba would never allow USA companies to operate businesses in Cuba. It positions the USA as an aggressor and thereby supplies the Castro regime with an additional enemy.
