How important are early reading skills in a child’s academic performance?
What other preschool factors influence a child’s later academic achievement?

It is said that children who start reading earlier in life are more likely to perform better in their school studies.As far as I am concerned, I totally agree with this statement for two reasons.

Firstly, the habit of early reading can lay a solid foundation for the concentration and listening abilities of children. Some researches have found that previous childhood is an evitable period for the formation of the habit of behavior and study, and reading as the basis of study ability, has a direct impact on a child’s academic achievement. That is to say, if children form a good habit of reading, they would be more interested in learning which can help them study more effectively in school. Secondly, curiosity is part of the children’s nature. They usually have a strong desire for knowledge and keep asking a number of questions. Early reading can not only help to answer their questions systematically but also serve as complementarities with school education. Besides, doing a lot of reading can strongly broaden children’s horizon and cultivate their independent personality.

Apart from pre-reading habit, there are a great amount of factors that can influence a child’s later academic achievement. However, I think parents are the most important factor among these. For example, it is impossible to expect politeness of a child if his parents are not polite and rude. What I like to say is that parents as the most influential factor in the preschool period should be aware of their own behavior and what their modeling to their kids. If parents want their children have a good academic performance, they should read at home and encourage their children to model their behavior and compliment them on their good manners often, they will continue to repeat their good behaviors.

Generally speaking, preschool period is of great importance to everyone, what we learn in this period can have a profound impact on the rest of our life. A good reading habit and the help from parents can let the children go on the successful fast track.
