Traditional Chinese medicine has been assiduously developed over more than two millennia, but it has recently aroused public attention and sparked heated controversy recently. Some people hold views that the comedown of Chinese medicine is an undisputable fact because the Chinese medicine theories are unscientific and it has too many uncertain therapeutic effects and high toxicity. On the contrary, others consider that anything in existence is reasonable and this can apply to the traditional Chinese medicine. From my point of view, I have a favorable opinion towards traditional Chinese medicine for two important reasons.
Firstly, although traditional Chinese medicine takes effect at a much slower pace than western medicine, it does have a greater effect on curing some diseases that are claimed incurable in the category of western medicine. There are a lot of examples to demonstrate the unique advantage of TCM. For instance, Maruko, one of my dogs, suffered serious concussions and paralysis in an accident many years ago. The vet recommended that we should give up any treatment on her because he though Maruko had no chance to survive with such a serious injury. As we were mired in sorrow and sadness, my mom consulted several Chinese medicine doctors and Maruko recovered completely after about a week of TCM treatment.
Furthermore, TCM comes in second place in top 20 quintessence of Chinese culture. There are tremendous amount of Chinese ancient medicinal books that have been regarded as Chinese cultural gem not only because of their great amount, but also the wide influence and enormous contribution it have to people. We can never forget that TMC had saved hundreds of people’s lives in the era of scarcity. For example, Mafeisan is the first anesthetic in the world which is created by Hua Tuo (an ancient Chinese doctor) for surgery. Hua Tuo and this kind of anesthetic have a great impact on the development of Chinese medicine. Although he had passed away ages ago, Hua has always been extolled for his superb medical skills and his humanitarian spirit in curing patients. Many Chinese people nowadays still praise the doctors who have extraordinary medical skills as Hua Tuo to express their appreciation.
In conclusion, from the two points I have presented above, I think traditional Chinese medicine deserve the heritage and transmission. But I think traditional Chinese medicine need to introduce a more scientific approach to make TCM more systematic which can help to resolve misunderstandings.
