Hi, teachers, please help me correct my article if there are any mistakes. Thank you.

Some people think that government is wasting money on the arts and that this money could be better spent elsewhere.
To that extent do you agree with this view?

There has been an on-going heated debate on whether government should allocate funds on the arts, like building art galleries, theatres or supporting the artists. Some people say that investing taxpayers’ money on the arts is a worthwhile, while others insist that the money should be spent on public infrastructure to improve people’s living standard. As far as I am concerned, I agree with the former opinion for two basic reasons.

Firstly, with the rapid development of economy, the living standard of people has been improved dramatically as well. People begin to pursue the spiritual enjoyment by creating and appreciating art, which helps them to calm down and relax after long hours of labor. Naturally, apart from survival needs, the government should also take care of the spiritual life of common people.

Additionally, the second reason is related to the cultural heritage. Nowadays, many art groups perform well and do not need the financial support from the government due to successful commercialized operation systems. Nevertheless, there are still some organizations that depend on government funding. For example, paper cutting art, Peking Opera and Chinese brush calligraphy, which are valuable cultural inheritance of China, might not have survived and thrived without the promotion by the government. It is the same with many other art forms of art all over the world.

In conclusion, it is the government’s duty to facilitate public services that provide for the basic needs of citizens. Furthermore, art is also an important part of human life and deserves equal attention and support from the government as other social infrastructure.
