1. GM food production will help end starvation in the world.
Experts say that people are going to die from environmental factors such as global warming and drought, and some of those are going to starve. They mention that genetically modified organisms could be the resolution for this terrifying issue: biotechnology of the present days has the potential that could help end starvation in the world. This is because GMOs are artificial: the genes of the foods are modified by humans. Moreover, the modification of the food genes makes it possible to create climate-change-resistant crops. In other words, humans now have the ability to make foods that are not susceptible to climate change, which has recently been considered a complex problem that needs to be resolved. David Zilberman, a UC Berkeley professor of agriculture, and resource economics, asks “Why not take advantage of these new molecular discoveries?”, and says “Small organic farming is nice. But if we really want to deal with climate change and with our growing population, then we have to take advantage of science.” His words are pretty rational, but he provides a paucity of evidence that eating GMOs is harmless to human health, which is the major concern that people have upon the nascent organisms. According to the article “GMOs: Research says they’ll help end starvation, but Americans remain wary”, Americans are skeptical about GMOs’ safety as to whether genetically engineered foods have deleterious effects on human’s health, and believe that they should refrain from eating GMOs until they are proved to be harmless to humans. Concurrently as this controversy has propagated in the public, GMOs do have several attractive features; for example, GMOs are less expensive to grow and produce higher yields. This propitious characteristics may lead to resolving the issue of starvation over the world; however, as long as the safety of the organisms remains questionable, people should not regard the new type of food as the solution to starvation because it might result in a more number of people’s deaths if the food had a harmful effect on human’s body.
