Spring Festival, also called Lunar New Year, is the most important festival in China. Just like Christmas in American mind status, Spring Festival is celebrated by Chinese throughout the world. People start cleaning the indoors and outdoors of their homes at least a week prior to the Eve of Spring Festival. City streets sparkle with red lanterns and the sound of traditional New Year songs fills the air.
The happiest thing for children during preparation is to do special purchases for the Lunar New Year. People usually buy traditional snacks, handcrafts, presents and new clothes. Chinese people like dress in red on festival days because red means victory, happiness and desire.
On the Eve of Spring Festival, people decorate their homes with traditional New Year paintings and flowers. Female family members will arrange the Spring Festival dinner very early that day because they have to prepare a dozen dishes. All family members will gather together to enjoy their Spring Festival dinner and after dinner senior will give children red envelopes which is one of traditional New Year’s customs, people put money in it as gift and hope it could bring children lucky and happiness.
People usually visit their relatives and friends to extend the New Year’s greetings on the following days. There are various grant celebrations, such as the Temple Fairs and Flower Fairs, people can enjoy the lion and dragon dancing, fireworks and excellent performances in the streets.
