It is difficult to discuss the topic that whether private cars are great beneficial or harmful to our daily life because it is such a multifaceted issue.
As far as I am concerned, I believe that private cars have brought more harms than benefits to us for three important reasons.
Firstly, the popularization of private cars has brought about a series of traffic problems. It is estimated that approximately 1 million people are killed or injured by traffic accidents every year. Traffic accidents may also hamper rescue works because ambulances and fire engines find it difficult to fulfill their duties during the period of traffic congestion. In addition, being late for school or work due to transportation problems, has a negative impact on people’s study performance and working efficiency .
Besides, cars often produce air pollution and unbearable nose. According to a health journal, the exhaust from automobile engines is believed the leading reason contributing to lung diseases. Besides, unpleasant noises can also make people suffer mentally and psychologically. Scientists indicated that noise pollution is associated with various chronic diseases, such as insomnia, cardiovascular diseases and stress-induced illnesses.
Last, but not the lease, private cars are a waste of resource. Private car owners have to pay a vast sum of money to exchequer, such as taxes, insurances, registration, maintenance and parking. What’s more, the widely use of gasoline vehicles may lead to the exhaustion of non-renewable energy, because renewable and environment-friendly fuels haven’t been comprehensively promoted to global markets.
Of course, I don’t mean that private cars are completely without merits. Private cars have also brought convenience to the public. Possessing a private car enables people move around freely and private cars can boost the development of related industries and offer more job opportunities.
In brief, from what has been discussed above, we can safely come to the conclusion that the disadvantages of private cars are quantitatively greater than its advantages. Therefore, I believe that private cars have more harm aspects than benefits to people.
