Q: Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others believe that school is the place to learn this. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
Children will create the world’s future. So teaching social rules to them is vital to built up the world in a good way. Some believe that families should be involved in teaching children the codes of conducts but some think it is just school’s obligation. In fact both views have advantages and disadvantages.
First of all, children psychiatrists believe that children’s personality forms up to the age three. It has been proved that children live for ever with what has been taught to them during the first three years of their life. Therefore, teaching at least some ground rules by parents needs to be started from birth. For example, children need to have seat belt buckled from the first day that they sit in the car. Indeed they do not like it at first but if parents keep making them using seat belt, they will get used to that soon otherwise they will never be keen to use it.
Secondly, home and school need to follow the same rules to teach the codes of conduct to the children efficiently. If parents and teachers are in the same page in teaching rules, it is less possible for children to be confused in absorbing social conventions. Otherwise, neither family nor school will succeed in teaching rules to the children which has direct negative impact on the society.
However, teachers have more knowledge about how to impose the social rules to the children. Teachers as educated people are able to use a wide range of psychological tools to institutionalize social behaviours among children. In addition to this, they have opportunity of using peer-pressure to encourage children imitating positive behaviours of each other. However, if children have not been well-brought up in their family, they will definitely have negative behaviours as well resulting unsuccessful attempt in teaching rules to the children. In this situations, clearly the role of family in teaching social rules to the children is not negligible and is complementary to school’s effort.
As a conclusion, there is no doubt that school should teach children the codes of conduct but it can not be practical efficiently if family does not accompany with school in the same page. Indeed, family plays the main and essential role in this issue.
