"In some countries around the world, voting is compulsory." Do you agree or disagree with the notion of compulsory voting?

The voting system in developing country is different while most of developed countries have followed the same strategy and method for organizing electoral events. However, whether enforcing citizens to take participation in national electoral events or give them the opportunity of participating is always a debated topic. I think compulsory voting is a faulty strategy which is against the freedom right of citizens and will impose unnecessary expenses to governments.

Mandatory voting is an infringement of citizen’s freedom according to most of democratic nations’ constitutions. Back to the history, some countries even those which now represent as developed and democratic countries had implemented mandatory voting. Take Australia as an example. In 1924, Australian government enforce its citizens to participate in Election Day which resulted lots of blank or random votes. This law abolished the year after as was regarded as the violation towards the freedom of democracy.

Moreover, maintaining and imposing the sanctions of compulsory voting causes unnecessary expenses for the government, especially those with strict budget. This strategy need lots of authorities, administrators and securities to keep an eye for non-voters. Furthermore, this kind of actions resulted in making people unsatisfying with their government which leads to increase the crime rates.

In conclusion, it is justified to say that mandatory voting is considered as an intrusion to individuals’ freedom right and will impose additional cost to the nations which is hoped to be abolished in every country the world over.
