There was nobody in the room, only a fly buzzing somewhere near the high, white-painted ceiling. John, with a bunch of his friends, entered the room. All afternoon, they had been studying the books their teacher had told them to read. They had found sitting in the library hot and extremely boring. Now it was the time to enjoy the free evening they had finally earned. They knew it would take Mary some time to come. They believed Mary’s only brother, whose name was Bill, had promised to bring them some crates of beer. Then Mary and Bill, who came by car, drove to the door. There wasn’t any beer. They were both angry, and had been arguing all the way driving home from the shop, because he had forgotten to buy the bottles for John and the boys. Mary said Bill needed a new head: most people remembered so simple a thing, as he was supposed to do.
