It is said that the development and rapid expansion of supermarkets in some countries makes many small, local business less competitive under such circumstance which may lead to the closure of local business and bring about the death of local communities. From my point of view, I agree with the above allegation for two basic reasons.

The first reason is related to price competition. China’s supermarket giants like Welcome and Parknshop are putting pressure on the retailers and ask them not to provide merchandises to private businesses or force them to raise the prices of goods to match the prices of the similar items in supermarkets. Consequently, many local private businesses shut down as people are likely to go shopping in the supermarkets because the advantage of price doesn’t exist any more. For example, there was a private store in my grandma’s community three years ago, but it closed at a loss when the owner was asked to reset the price of the products that sell in his store. After the closure of the store, people living in the community have to travel a long distance to buy essentials in the nearest supermarkets.

The second reason is about the influence of advertisement. With a strong financial strength, many chain supermarkets can afford the high cost of advertising and invite celebrities to promote their brands. For instance, I can see the advertisement of Welcome everywhere, such as newspaper, radio, TV, Internet or even subway. They also invite different pop sensations like movie stars and singers as spokesperson to attract people’s attention. This approach does work because the financial performance speaks for itself. Nevertheless, small local businesses can only depend on the most primitive human marketing ads: word-of-mouth. Only very limited amount of people know the location of these small businesses; by contrast, we can now find the specific address of the chain supermarkets through the official website or below the ads.

In conclusion, from the reasons I have presented, I agree that supermarkets have a great impact on the development of the small local businesses.
