It is sometimes difficult to discuss traveling by air because it is such a multifaceted topic. Some people think it has drawbacks to the environment whilst others say that it is beneficial. Comparing the two alternatives, I hold a favorable view of the former position.
First, let’s consider the advantages of traveling by airplane. Firstly, with the booming of global economy, corporations are building closer cooperation relationship with each others. Therefore, air traffic is absolutely important as time is precious in a modern business world; traveling by airplane can save business people a lot of time and they can do more businesses, thus boosting the business development. Besides, airplane also has a positive effect on tourism. Compared with other transportation tools like trains, ship or bus, airplane can provide people a relaxed tour because they can have a good rest during the trip and it is convenient as well that why more and more people are likely to travel by air.
Nevertheless, there are disadvantages to be considered as well. Most resources airplanes are consuming now are non-renewable, and they can cause a lot of pollution. We can see from an authoritative research, in order of most polluting, it goes: airplanes, cars, trains, and coach buses. Planes across the world can emit billions of tons of greenhouses gases such as carbon dioxide directly into earth’s atmosphere. In addition, the burning of fossil fuels releases sulfur dioxide that contributes to acid rains, which damage buildings, forests and waters. Furthermore, noise produced by airplanes is considered a form of pollution.
In conclusion, I favor the former position over the latter one because the disadvantages of traveling by airplane are quantitatively greater than the advantages, and I think people should consider choosing other more environmentally friendly transport tools first than airplane when they are traveling.
