Can anyone please check this for grammar, sentence structure, etc. Thank you a lot.

In the Mayan society, the ritual enemas were used to shift one’s state of consciousness. Men, women, children, shaman and gods were using them all the time. South American Indians performed the rituals by using native rubber tree sap for bulbed enemas syringes. To alter one’s state of consciousness and suffer less side effects they injected the enemas into their rectum. According to Chapter 23 Ritual Enemas, “…the ritual importance of the intoxicating enema is highlighted by the involvement in the rite of one of the greatest underworld deities, a lord associated with earth, water, and agricultural fertility…Yucatecan god Pauchatun…” (Furst and Coe 208). When enemas were introduced in the New World they were used for medical purposes like reliving constipation and irritable bowel movements. Enemas developed differently in the New World because the Christians (Spaniards) believed hallucinogenic drugs or rituals were “demonic”. The New World were into organized religion and less on spirituality. The indigenous people (Old World) connected with nature and the divine.

Jivaro shamans drink a hallucinogenic called natema. After drinking natema, they gain supernatural powers in the form of spiritual helpers (“darts”) called tsentsak. The shamans are secluded in the jungle and learn to increase their power by absenting from sexual intercourse for many months. After a few months the tsentsak emerges from the shaman’s mouth. There are curing and bewitching shamans. The “darts” are used to either kill or cure a person. The spiritual helpers shields curing shaman from psychic attacks. The Chapter also states that “…the pasuk being specialized for the service of bewitching, has a protective shield to guard it from counterattack by the curing shaman.” (Furst and Coe 212). The curing shaman sucks “darts” from victims due to witchcraft and the bewitching shaman tests his abilities to kill a man every five years. Villagers understand that shamans are very significant because they are able to detect illnesses (emotional, physical, and spiritual). Shamans are the mediators between earth and the supernatural.
