I think that in this case I would capitalize the durables to indicate more clearly that they are industries: Of the eight consumer durables, Telephones experienced the strongest gain, rising by 34% from 42% in 1972 to 77% in 1983, followed by Central Heating which increased by 27% from 37% in 1972 to 64% in 1983. PS: And I'd add an ' s ' to 'telephone'. I'm not into financial markets, etc, however, and it might be wisest to check how other similar reports treat these items-- Consumer Durables might also be capitalized.
