Pronunciation of words 'lower' and 'power'

In the pronunciation of word 'lower' is there a glide /w/ between the two syllables /l??/ and /?(r)/ and similarly in the pronunciation of 'power' /pa?/ and /?(r)/ or are the dipthongs replaced by [l?w?(r)] and [paw?(r)] respectively?

Top answer

Power is two syllables, the w being fully articulated. Hence, the vowel is a bit stronger than the schwa in lower , where the w is barely articulated.

Do you mean you pronunce 'power' as [paw ?(r)] and not as [pa? w ?(r) and 'lower' as [l?? ?(r)] ?

Phonetic alphabets can be confusing so I'll try with this:
Pow.+ wer. Low + er. In both cases, the first syllable is stressed, but the w-glide to the second syllable is stronger in 'power'. This is primarily because the mouth is open wider (broader) in 'power' and needs to close, thus making the glide through the W more noticeable. I think this is the best I can do witho

Here is how I would transcribe them. /'lo?.?/ /'pa?.w?/ (AmE)

You can put a weak /w/ in "lower" if you wish, i.e., a /w/ with less lip rounding than in "power".

Anonymous'our' and 'hour'.
Probably /a??/ and /'a?.(w)?/ though they sometimes come out sounding the same. It may depend on how fast you're talking.
