Pronunciation of varied

Hi

Would you say that the underlined part rhymes with mid? Or is the homophone of the word read?

Varied = mid
Varied = read

Neither, in BrE. In fact the second syllable of that word does not rhyme with any monosyllabic word.

You're focusing on the length of the vowel then?

varied has [ i ]; reed has [ i: ] — as I hear them in AmE, anyway.

I wasn't transcribing that closely when I answered the OP's question.

I was thinking of the length of the vowel, because the OP use the word 'rhyme'. The difference between the two sounds is the same in BrE as in AmE. It is, in my opinion, a big enough difference, difference for us not to accept the word 'rhyme'. I would say the same about 'pea' and the second syllable of 'happy'.
