Pronunciation of the unvoiced sound.

Hi.there

When pronouncing the word 'school' .In our country ,we were taught to produce the sound like 1)

1) sgu:l because the 's' sound is in the front of 'k' sound, so 'sku:l' become 'sgu:l'

that is to say,the unvoiced sound 'K' pronounces voiced sound 'g'.

2) Another opinion ,which I 'm very much supportive ,is the 'k' still pronounces 'k','sku:l'.unvoiced.

But because the 's' is in front of it,when you produce the 'k' sound, you just don't push a lot of air out of your mouth. it makes other people think you are pronouncing 'g' ,but it actually is still a 'k' .not 'g', but it has a subtle difference with the 'normal k'.

So would you please tell me which one is correct or more acceptable to your ear.

or both? and How do you produce the sound? .

Thank you!

  • This is exactly right.
  • Speakers of Chinese are often given the advice to pronounce "sk" as "sg", "st" as "sd" and "sp" as "sb", but that's just a different way of notating the phonetic feature called aspiration -- or rather, the lack of it in these cases.
  • These rules may be helpful, but, as you know, they are not scientifically correct.
