Pronunciation of "synthesis"

A friend and I got in an argument after i corrected his pronunciation of the word synthesis.

He pronounces it with emphasis on the e, like sin-theesis. Basically the same as the word thesis is pronounced on its own, but with sin added onto the front of the word.

I pronounce it with a short 'e', like i've heard most people use. His argument is that both ways are correct, and his isn't wrong because that is how the word thesis is pronounced and that's where the word synthesis comes from.

Is his pronunciation necessarily wrong or are they both right? Is there anywhere in the world that pronounces it his way?

Neither have I, but the question is whether or not his way is necessarily wrong? Are there two ways to pronounce synthesis, similar to how there are two ways to pronounce 'the'? One being "thuh" and the other way being "thee".

No. Only your way, /'s?n??s?s/, is correct.

According to Oxford dictionary and to few others, the form /'s?n??s?s/ is correct too.

Perhaps this form is more common in British English.

I'm just glad he doesn't also have a lisp. Emotion: wink

Sorry; I forgot this minor variation. I was concentrating on the unacceptability of your friend's version.
