Pronunciation of "prophesies"

The following four lines are from a poem:

The motion that we share entails it all:
The virgin birth, the carol tune, the tall
Luminous star that prophesies - although
Its only secret is that children grow.

The question I have is about the pronunciation of "prophesies." Should it be "prof-eh-seez" or "prof-eh-size?" The poem was written by a multi-national... born in Poland, raised in England and Germany, with the later years of his life spent in The United States. In discussions with friends we had disagreements. The word seems to be a plural of prophesy but it is not used that way in the poem. Any ideas?
