Pronunciation of "manga"

At a library in Oregon, I was asked about "monja". As I didn't understand what monja was, I asked them back if it was "ninja", but they said no and repeated the word "monja", and then they took me to the section of "manga". One of them was a librarian there, so I wondered if it was a standard pronunciation of "manga" in the US. Is it?

What is a "manga"? Never heard of the word. I can think of words that this may be a typo of - from magma to mango - but "manga" isn't an English word that I'm familiar with.
