Pronunciation of "Elgin" and "Lagos"

Just been watching an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and I heard these two pronunciations:
Elgin ('EldZIn) Marbles
Lagos (lA:gOs) (capital of Nigeria)
Are these standard AmE pronunciations, or just mispronunciations by the actors?
I may not have the exact vowel quality for "Lagos" quite right.

Has been so for about 15 years or so. Richard Chambers Leeds UK.

I suggest the latter may be due to confusion with Spanish "Lagos" ("lakes") names in N America. Those I (Brit) say as /'lA:gA.s/ while the Nigerian one is /'leIgA.s/ .

Certainly I'd agree that it's been Spanishized. The origin of the city's name is Portuguese, FWIW.

Oh, that Elgin. We have one over here, and that one goes with gin and tonic.
But "Marbles"?
[nq:1]Lagos (lA:gOs) (capital of Nigeria)[/nq]
Capital? That's Abuja.

I was wondering about that. Thanks.

I've only heard it before as /'ElgIn/.

My fourth-grade teacher was from Elgin, Illinois, and she pronounced Elgin as you have indicated (soft g). That's the only way I've ever hea

Abuja is one of those purpose-built capitals. It's located approximately in the centre of the country, which has some degree of political sense to it. So no, it's not got a connection with Lagos.
