Pronunciation of "Courage" and "Current" in American English

Hey, haven't been on here for a while now ... but this forum is great!!

What's the prefered pronunciation of "Courage" and "Current" in American English? I suppose the first one suggested by answers.com with the û-sound, rather than the u-sound?? I've realized I always tended ti use the latter, while I've been schooled in BE from the start (as being from Europe), but after several years in the US have dropped most of the BE (but certainly still use some of it).

Is there any preference for any of them related to any certain geographical regions?

Hi from Florida. I hope this helps - the preferred pronunciation of both the our in "courage" and the ur in "current" sound like the er in the word "operation" or the ur in the word "further". I've never heard them pronounced differently in my visits throughout the country.

Yes, the first is most widespread in the U.S. The second one (with the u-sound) is limited to a few areas in the eastern part of the U.S. That second pronunciation is common in words with "urr": "hurry", "furry", "hurricane", ...

Thanks a lot for your answers,

Still the 'u' sound in hurry is usually the same way right? although both exist.
