Pronunciation of coat and quote

Hi

For Pakistanis, coat and quote have exactly the same pronunciation. In fact, whatever words start with "qu", Pakistanis and Indians treat them like the start of coat. But the phonetic symbols are definitely different in dictionaries.

Could you please tell me how different their pronunciations are in the "ears" of a native speaker?

Thanks,

Tom

There is a distinct difference between /k/ and /kw/ to a native speaker. I know several people from Pakistan and from India, and I've never noticed a difficulty on their part to pronounce them differently.

When she gets into the que question, she is a little misleading.

'applique' and' bouquet' are French words taken into English. The qu is pronounced /k/ in both words; the [eI] sound comes from the French ending (é in the first example).

"Bar-B-Q" is a relatively new spelling for barbacua, an American Spanish word for a method of cooking. The Englis

Absolutely right CJ,
They often pronounce it as east.
