Pronunciation of 'clothes'?

I just checked on Howjsay and it's pronounced 'clothes' as in [klothz]. I've been always pronouncing it same as 'close'.

I enunciate the "th" sound, so the pronunciation of "clothes" is distinct from "close."

People in this area, south-east Ireland, completely omit the 'th'.

When pronouncing 'clothing,' however, 'th' is fully pronounced.

I'm a native English speaker in the US, and I pronounce "clothes" exactly the same as "close." In the sentence, "Hang your clothes on the door and close it after you.", there's no confusion, because the context, phrasing, and intonation make it clear which word is "clothes" and which is "close."

English dialects and accents vary widely (especially over the British Isles!). There are databases of these recordings, so you can hear the differences:

Daithy I've been always pronouncing it same as 'close'.
Me, too—and that's what I teach my students. It saves them a lot of anguish and frustration.
