reed is (roughly) the homophone of read

-- but what about these words as verbs? Same pronunciation as you mentioned above?

"reed" is pronounced identically to "read" present tense. However, "read" past tense is pronounced as "red", so "read" is not a good word to choose for pronunciation illustrations.
