Speech & Pronunciation

Pronunciation and Intonation

Would you please rate my accent? Thank you. This is what I read: "Poetry is as universal as language and almost as ancient. The most primitive peoples have used it, and the most civilized have cultivated it. In all ages, and in all countries poetry has been written-and eagerly listened to-by all kinds and conditions of people."

After posting in "English Audio: Speech and Pronunciation" I thought I would be asked to record my voice, but the post just went for moderation. How can I attach my voice record? Can I use another site and insert the link here?

Your accent is excellent. You are clear and easy to understand. Most of your recording sounds like a native speaker with an American accent. Country and written were a bit off. You would not pass as a local where I live (SE US) but for the most part people around here would think you came from somewhere else in North America.

Hi, fivejedjon. Thank you for your reply. I checked the pronunciation of "country" and I guess I realize now that where I made the mistake, but I cannot get what was wrong with my pronunciation of "written". Could you please tell me? Thank you again.

It sounded almost like 'readen'. A vocalised /t/ is fine for many AmE varieties, but the first vowel was far too close to /i:/.
