Pronunciation...

What are some of the important rules when saying a word. For example, the word "cake," when there is an "e" at the end it makes the "a" long. What are the sounds for short vowels and long vowels.

What other simple rules are out there to help me pronounce words correctly such as lozenges? I've had the hardest time pronoucing this word! Please help!

To me, there are no certain rules about pronunciation. It usually doesn't base on the spelling. Why don't you use your dictionary and get familiarized with the words that give you hard times?
