Pronouns?

This is what the book called “Practical English by Oxford” says: We use do so mainly to refer to the same action, with the same subject, that was mentioned before. In other cases we prefer do it/that or do alone.

Is this a general rule you guys follow? So is this sentence considered as a mistake? Should I use “do it/do that/do so” instead?

Japanese people generally hold a Christmas party on the 24th of December, while most Australians do so on the 25th of December.
