I will comment:

I don't want to be too prescriptive, but native speakers accept quite a bit that is ungrammatical. The case of singular "they" makes sense, even though it is still wrong technically. It makes sense because it solves a problem that exists when the speaker doesn't know the gender of the 3rd person subject, object, or possessor. Still, students need to kn

I don't see why the -ing form in apposition is wrong. It sounds natural. Or is that just me saying it?

Which standardised tests are those? The Cambridge suite and IELTS would not penalsis 'him'.

Indeed. I don't understand how him can be ungrammatical in the sentence. There's a preposition (to) before it, and prepositions are followed by the object form. Maybe this notion arises from the incorrect
