Pronouncing hall, ball, mall etc

When you say ball, hall, mall etc, when do you move your tongue tip upwards?

  1. Keep it pointed upwards all the while you are making the sound.
  2. Start making the sound and then raise the tip upwards near the end of it.
  3. Start with the tip pointed upwards and then lower it towards the end.

#2 is the closest answer. You pronounce the "a" of the word, and at the end of it, your tongue touches the alveolar ridge, with the tongue rather wide and flat at that moment.

Pointing your tongue upwards isn't enough. You have to touch the front of your tongue above your teeth. I experience the touching with more than just the tip of the tongue.

(Don't round your lips or you'll get something more like O.)
