Pronouncing 'But' in a sentence

How do people usually pronounce the word But in a sentence? For example in the sentence 'But I want to', do you pronounce it as "Ba I want to", or as something else?

It would be great if someone could give me a general list of rules of how to pronounce words like this where you make reductions to the word when pronouncing.

There are no rules that I know of. It simply happens, and it happens differently with differnt people and in different cases. I just tried pronouncing 'but' in a sentence and found that sometimes I'll leave out the 't' and sometimes give it just a flap with the tip of my tongue, more like a 'd' sound.

  • You might as well ask what the 'rule' is for making "going to" sound like "gonna".
  • I use this as an example because just a couple of weeks ago I had a program director on a trip to Czeck Republic whose English was excellent.
