Pronoun "they"

My daughter-in-law has been trying to get my son out of his tighty-whiteys for a few years now. He has gained a few pounds and they are just a little too tight. He isn't overweight, but men's underwear makers don't make in-between sizes. She has bought him a larger size, but he refuses to wear them.

This writing is from "Dear abby".
"She has bought him a larger size, but he refused to wear them.

In the last sentence, the writer used pronoun "Them". When I read the sentence, I feel a little awkward. It sounds like the pronoun "them" refers to "a larger size".

As you know, pronoun "They" is for a plural noun.
These are the sentences I think correct.

She has bought him larger sizes, but he refused to wear them (I would use this).
Or.. She has bought him a larger size, but he refused to wear it.

Any advice?
