Pronoun substituting "fate"

Fate carefully protected me from comprehending the unpleasant truth about a society in which, at her whim, I happened to be born.

What is correct? at her whim, or at its whim?

Being without gender, you can use 'its'. However, it's reasonable to personify fate and therefore 'her' is okay, especially in a poetic sense.
