Pronoun reference

Everybody at the party had a good time, and they were all well behaved.

Would you write this or avoid the incorrect pronoun reference?

Thanks

I would certainly say that. If I were writing carefully (that is, to avoid attack), I would change 'everybody' to 'all' or 'the guests'.

Thanks, I don't suppose you know why there is no gender-neutral, singular pronoun, do you?

Yes, generally: Old English had grammatical gender (nouns, adjectives inflected for gender), so the omission was unnoticeable. HERE'S some comment:

A brief history of singular "their" (etc.)

It's probably worth mentioning that one reason the use of 'they' to refer to words such as 'anybody' and 'everybody' has widespread acceptance is that such words are grammatically singular but semantically plural.
