Pronoun Problem

The three main elements of music are rhythm, harmony, and melody. Rhythm, the most basic of the three, refers to the duration of tones and the stresses placed upon it/them.

I incorrectly believed the pronoun in the sentence should have been "it," which referred back to "Rhythm."
