Pronoun problem

The passage below is from a website.

http://www.kimhartman.se/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Start-with-why-by-Simon-Sinek.pdf

No one likes to lose, and most healthy people live their life to win. The only variation is the score we use. For some it's money, for others it's fame or awards.

What I want to know is what underlined it stands for. In one way it seems to represent ‘variation,’ but in another it seems to represent ‘score.’ (I think ‘variation’ is better, though.) Can you help me?

In terms of grammar and in terms of meaning, it refers to 'score'. eg Tom has $100. Fred has $1 million.
